Can Web3 and Cryptocurrency Pave the Way for Abortion Focused Dao?

2022/05/16By:

After the disclosure of the draft opinion of the U.S. Supreme Court, which will overturn the landmark ruling in Roy v. Wade in 1973, activists and entrepreneurs are looking for alternatives to help fund a “abortion focused” Dao.

Ultimately, they see it as a way to fund women in more than 20 states where abortion services may be greatly restricted or prohibited. However, if Luo is overthrown, it is worth noting that abortion will not be “banned” – on the contrary, States will be able to determine the legitimacy of the procedure alone. At present, 13 states in the United States, including Arkansas, Idaho, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Utah and Wyoming, have expressed their willingness to prohibit abortion through the “trigger law”, which will effectively prohibit abortion immediately after pending judgment.

Since many anti abortion groups are already accepting cryptocurrency donations, abortion non-profit organizations and health care institutions in most countries still do not accept cryptocurrency because it has not entered many dialogues since the SCO draft was leaked.

However, Elissa maercklein, chief executive of NFT group crypto chicks, said the shift in dialogue could happen soon. As early as February this year, crypto chicks donated five eth to the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) (more than 15000 US dollars at that time). As of Friday, about 10000 US dollars had become the first cryptocurrency donation accepted by the organization.

“When I contacted them, they were a little surprised, but wanted to know more,” maercklein told the New York Times. In cooperation with the International Planned Parenthood Federation, maercklein ensured that the organization would continue to receive cryptocurrency donations through the giving block platform, which would also enable some anti abortion groups, including the League for freedom, the national right to life and American students for life.

How Will Abortion Rights Dao Work?

If Roy v. Wade is overturned, these “trigger laws” will bring new obstacles and costs to providers and women seeking abortion, according to gynaecologist giobanina Anthony. Ideally, members of the abortion rights Dao would pool funds to pay for out of state travel, in clinic procedures and pills that account for 54% of abortions in the United States. Large technology companies, including Amazon and Citigroup, have also agreed to help employees pay for travel, although financial facilitation of abortion may be punished in many states.

Dao Utility

In 2021, more than US $40 million of ether coins were raised through Dao. From constitutional Dao to the rise of cryptocurrency donation to Ukraine through Ukrainian Dao, this part was organized by Nadya tolokonnikova of pussy riot.

Through the sale of Ukrainian flag NFT, the Dao raised more than $7 million in just a few days to help Russia provide humanitarian and relief work during the unwarranted invasion of Ukraine in February.

The question is, as the dialogue around the overthrow of Roy continues, can Web3 provide another way to raise funds through digital currency?
